| So you always wanted to join the army or be in that Black Hawk Down film? You've tried paintball but it's expensive and just not quite real enough, you've been to the laser tag but you can never hit the bloody target on the enemy and you're sick of hearing Greatest Sci Fi Hits while you play. Well thankfully for you and thousands of others Airsoft has come to the rescue and 99.99% need apply! Obviously safety is a priority. All sites require that eye protection is worn as a minimum but often players who are new to the game wear a full face mask. The only other thing that's a good idea is a pair of sturdy footwear. While high heels may look good they aren't the best for running through woods. Airsoft is somewhere in between paintball and re-enactment. The rifles used are replicas of real weapons, past, current and even some from the not so distant future. A large number of players are military and ex military as well as a large number of uniformed youth groups, some are postmen, policemen, office workers, drivers and general layabouts. The rifles themselves fire fully automatic with 6mm plastic BB's at a varying speed but normally around the 300 feet per second. This speed is slow enough to give you range but fast enough to peg your mate at 40 metres :o) most of the rifles fire around 600-800 rounds a minute! Airsoft is far cheaper than paintball due to the rifles being electric instead of gas, coupled with this the BB's are far cheaper. Rifle types range across a massive range of styles, you can have that Soviet feel with an AK47, the Delta Force look with a M4, be a Vietnam GI with a M16, use the UK Police G36 or MP5. As well as this support guns, sniper rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers and pistols are all available. A games day consists of several mission games, players are normally split into two teams. Each game has an objective and each team has to work as a team to achieve their goal. The complexity of missions can vary from a short 10 minute Capture the Flag to a 24 hour extravaganza! The shooting and hitting a player works almost entirely on an honour based system as the BB's done leave any mark on your clothing. Players who are shot call "HIT" and stand up. Depending the game type you may have medics etc who can heal you back in. It's a simple and very effective method. So in a nutshell, it's the closest thing you're going to get to the real thing so what you waiting for? |
